What RNs do
- Assess patients and document their condition
- Carry out care plans and physician orders, including medications and IV therapy
- Monitor and respond to changes in a patient’s condition
- Teach patients and families how to manage care
- Coordinate with physicians, therapists, pharmacists and other nurses
Where RNs work
Hospitals (medical-surgical, ICU, emergency, operating room and recovery), outpatient surgery centers, physician and specialty practices, home health and home infusion agencies, schools, long-term care and many more settings. Operating room RNs often work as circulators, managing the room, the patient and safety checks during surgery, and recovery (PACU) nurses care for patients as they wake from anesthesia.
License and credentials
RNs need an active, unrestricted registered nurse license. In Texas, licenses are issued by the Texas Board of Nursing. Texas belongs to the Nurse Licensure Compact, so a nurse who holds a multistate license from a compact state can practice in Texas, and a Texas multistate license works in other compact states.
Employers usually ask for Basic Life Support (BLS); many specialties also ask for Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Specialty certifications, such as CNOR for operating room nurses, are often preferred.
Schedules
RN roles are full-time, part-time or PRN (as needed). Surgery-center and practice roles often follow the surgery schedule rather than 12-hour shifts.
Questions
Can I work in Texas with a license from another state?
If you hold a multistate license from a Nurse Licensure Compact state, you can practice in Texas. Otherwise you apply to the Texas Board of Nursing for licensure by endorsement.
What is the difference between an OR circulator and a scrub nurse?
The circulating nurse manages the operating room outside the sterile field: the patient, safety checks, documentation and supplies. The scrub role works inside the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon.
