About the role

A private family in the Little Elm / Frisco area is seeking a part-time Special Education Teacher / Literacy & Communication Tutor for a young adult with autism and limited expressive speech. He understands spoken language well; speech is hard for him to produce, so comprehension must never be judged by what he can say aloud. You will assess current literacy (letter recognition, phonics, word recognition, comprehension, functional literacy) without requiring a spoken response for every task, build an individualized plan, and deliver systematic, explicit literacy instruction using phonics, functional vocabulary, picture and word supports and age-respectful materials. You will support communication with AAC and visual supports, coordinate with his speech-language pathologist when authorized, adapt sessions to sensory, attention and regulation needs, and keep brief, measurable progress records. Initially about three sessions a week of 30–60 minutes; compensation negotiable on qualifications, experience, preparation time and session length. This is a tutoring role, separate from the family's caregiver position. Apply with your résumé, qualifications, hourly rate and availability, and tell us briefly how you would approach teaching reading to an autistic young adult who understands spoken instructions but has difficulty producing intelligible speech.
